 Genital herpes was the most talked about disease before HIV/Aids hit the headlines in the early 80s. Herpes gained notoriety because once someone had it in their system; it would stay there forever, resurfacing every now and then to cause an outbreak before becoming dormant again. Popular media even came up with catchy slogans such as, “unlike true love, it was forever’.

 There are two types of herpes viruses - HSV-1 and HSV-2. The herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) triggers infection around the mouth. You will experience fever blisters and cold sores around your mouth.
On the other hand, HSV-2 herpes infection can be observed near the genital area. This type of herpes is sexually transmitted. The symptoms may or may not show, but herpes simplex virus is highly contagious. When you have the first outbreak, one or two blisters will appear around the genitals, rectum, or mouth. |
